Abstract
By hierdie geleentheid van die amptelike aanvaarding van ’n professoraat in die Geskiedenis, vra ek u welwil- lende aandag vir enkele gedagtes oor ’n onderwerp wat ek wil betitel: oor historiese waarheid. Vooraf is egter enkele verduidelikinge nodig. (a) By die aanhoor van hierdie titel kan dadelik die vraag gestel word: wat is waarheid? Daarom moet dit in die eerste plek duidelik verstaan word dat, hoewel ek my hier ook effens op die terrein van die filosofie van die Geskiedenis gaan beweeg, dit geensins in my bedoeling lê om hierdie vraag filosofies te benader en ’n antwoord daarop te probeer gee nie. Dit gaan hier 00/ historiese waarheid, en dan wel oor historiese waarheid as ’n praktiese saak waarmee elke beoefenaar van die geskiedeniswetenskap, hetsy navorser of dosent, elke oomblik van sy lewe te doen het.
